Maaninka wetlands

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Several adjacent small wetlands around the settlement of Maaninkaj with surrounding agricultural areas and forests. All wetlands are shallow and nutrient-rich due mainly to nutrient run-off from local fields.

Key biodiversity
Also nationally important for breeding Botaurus stellaris (3-5 males), Circus aeruginosus (4-7 pairs) and Porzana porzana (3-35 males). Staging species include Grus grus (150 birds), Tringa erythropus (150 birds), T. glareola (500 birds) and Philomachus pugnax (2,000 birds). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (1-3 individuals, passage), Crex crex (1-5 pairs, breeding), Gallinago media (max. 3 individuals, passage).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The major human impact on waterbirds at the site is autumn hunting. Overgrowth of the wetland is also a threat. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.

Protected areas
