Site description (2000 baseline)
A large complex of peatlands and wetlands along the Lätäseno and Jietajoki rivers. The area supports well-developed mires characteristic of the palsa mire region of northernmost Lapland. Numerous lakes, ponds, rivers and streams pass through the peatlands, and there are some forests restricted to mineral soils. Since the area is protected, human impact is slight, with some hunting in autumn, and an illegal spring hunting `season'.

Key biodiversity
An important breeding area for Arctic species, especially waders, e.g. Limicola falcinellus, Calidris alpina (100-300 pairs), Tringa glareola, T. erythropus (50-150 pairs) and Phalaropus lobatus.
