IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Greylag Goose Anser anser LC passage (1996) 100–450 birds B1i
Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula LC winter (1996) 150–415 birds B1i
Corncrake Crex crex LC breeding (1996) 40–60 pairs A1
Spotted Crake Porzana porzana LC breeding (1996) 70–180 pairs B3
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (1996) 20–50 pairs B2
Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus LC breeding (1996) 3–5 pairs B2
Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus LC breeding (1996) 430–550 pairs B3
Savi's Warbler Locustella luscinioides LC breeding (1996) 70–110 pairs B3
Barred Warbler Curruca nisoria LC breeding (1996) 80–100 pairs B3
Whinchat Saxicola rubetra LC breeding (1996) 200–280 pairs B3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.
