Longqi Shan Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Longqi Shan is located in north-western Fujian Province, on an eastern extension of the Wuyi Shan mountains. There are over 40 mountains above 1,000 m within the nature reserve, which contains well-preserved primary broadleaf evergreen forest and has forest cover of 97%.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Taxus chinensis and Bretschneidera sinensis. Animals include Andrias davidianus, Python molurus, Macaca mulatta, Manis pentadactyla, Lutra lutra, Selenarctos thibetanus, Neofelis nebulosa, Panthera pardus, Viverricula indica and Capricornis sumatraensis.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a county-level nature reserve in 1984, upgraded to provincial level in 1989 and to a national nature reserve (12,600 ha) in 1998, and in 2003 expanded by 3,100 ha to an area of 15,700 ha.
