Lomma Bight

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2007 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis LC winter (2006) 4,000 birds A4i, B1i, C2
Greylag Goose Anser anser LC resident (2006) 3,000 birds B1i, C3
Common Eider Somateria mollissima NT passage (2006) 15,000 birds B1i, C3
Smew Mergellus albellus LC winter (2006) 50 birds C2
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC winter (2005–2006) 13,000 birds A4i, B1i, C3
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta LC breeding (2006–2007) 10–48 birds B3, C6
Eurasian Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria LC passage (2004) 10,000 birds A4i, B1i, C2
Little Tern Sternula albifrons LC breeding (2006–2007) 25 pairs C6
Common Tern Sterna hirundo LC breeding (2006–2007) 10–50 pairs C6
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (2006–2007) 20,000-49,999 birds A4iii, C4

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2007. The most recent assessment (2018) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2018 good medium medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Coastal/Supratidal good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Residential and commercial development likely in long term (>4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
