Site description (2003 baseline):

Site location and context
Lalobata is a hilly area with the highest peak of Gunung Iga (1130 m). TGhis area is a place of the nomadic Togutil ethnic group. Togutil people collect sago, root, vegetables, medicinal plant, resin and also do hunting. People who live in the coastal area generally work as farmer and fisherman.



Key biodiversity
This area is one of few areas that have high number restricted-range bird species. Population of Chattering Lory in this area is estimated around 9300 birds at the end of 1994. (BirdLife International 2001).

Non-bird biodiversity: The endemic amphibian of Halmahera island is Hylophorbus dubius. The other important fauna is Cervus timorensis moluccensis (MacKinnon et.al.1995).



Habitat and land use
The main vegetation is evergreen rainforest (Monk et.al.1997).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Logging, gold mining, parrot catching for trading and forest clearence for plantation.



Protected areas
189000 ha of this area is proposed as a Wildlife Sanctuary (Smiet et.al.1981). 140000 ha of this area is proposed as a part of Ake Tajawe-Lalobata National Park by PKA/BirdLife International-Indonesia Programme (1998).
