IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2011 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Corncrake Crex crex LC breeding (1992–1999) 270–290 pairs C6
Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus NT breeding (1989–1996) 360–470 pairs B2
Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata NT breeding (2002–2011) 9–12 pairs A1, C1
Eurasian Scops-owl Otus scops LC breeding (2000–2010) 40–65 pairs B2
Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus LC winter (2000–2010) 30–50 birds C6
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU passage (2000–2010) 100–200 birds A1, C1, C6
Barred Warbler Curruca nisoria LC breeding (2004–2010) 110–160 pairs B3, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2011. The most recent assessment (2015) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2015 very poor very high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Corncrake Crex crex 126 / 280 (males) 45 poor
Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus 105 / 415 (pairs) 26 very poor
Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata 6 / 12 (pairs) 50 poor
Eurasian Woodcock Scolopax rusticola 7 / 110 (pairs) 7 very poor
Whinchat Saxicola rubetra 300 / 2,100 (pairs) 15 very poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland moderate (70–90%) very poor (<40%) very poor
Forest poor (40–69%) good (>90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low
Transportation and service corridors happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
