Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
An area on the Tyrrhenian coast, south-west of Rome, including open sea, sand-dunes and beaches, and a mosaic of maquis, woodlands, wetlands, urban and cultivated areas. The main land-uses are agriculture, tourism and nature conservation.
An important breeding site for open-country birds such as
Milvus migrans and
Merops apiaster. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Aythya nyroca (max. 2, winter).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Although human impact is already quite strong in the area, the main threats are from further urbanization and industrialization, agricultural intensification, and the building of tourist resorts and associated infrastructure. There is a bird-ringing station at Macchiagrande di Focene. There is a project to protect the nests of
Charadrius alexandrinus and
Charadrius dubius.

International UnknownIBA contains State Nature Reserve (Litorale Romano, area not known). 5,989 ha of IBA covered by Private Reserve (Castelporziano e Capracotta, 5,989 ha). 280 ha of IBA covered by Private Reserve (Macchiagrande di Focene, 280 ha). Overlaps with SPA.
