NO045
Lista wetland system

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2014 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis VU winter (2011) 500 birds A1
Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca VU winter (2008) 265 birds A1, B2
Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus VU winter (2004–2013) 100–150 birds B1i, B2
Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata NT breeding (2013) 10 pairs A1
Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus LC breeding (2013) 2,237 pairs B1i, B3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2014. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 very poor high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis 177 / 500 (birds) 36 very poor
Melanitta fusca 110 / 265 (birds) 42 poor
Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus 58 / 150 (birds) 39 very poor
Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata 15 / 10 (pairs) 100 good
Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus 2,109 / 2,237 (pairs) 95 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Climate change and severe weather happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Transportation and service corridors happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Pollution happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place medium
