Lakes Vegoritis and Petron


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Two freshwater lakes in an area of hills and mountains.



Key biodiversity
The site is important for wintering ducks and geese. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (wintering), Haliaeetus albicilla (non-breeding).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are water abstraction from Lake Vegoritida (`Other' threats) and pollution of Lake Petron (`Other' threats). Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Partial International NonePart of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Ampelia/Amyntaiou, 2,500 ha). 440 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Maniakiou, 440 ha).
