Lakes Cheimaditis and Zazari

Site location and context
Two eutrophic lakes at the foot of Mount Verno. They are surrounded by extensive reedbeds (Phragmites). Beyond the lakes is a mosaic of woodland, pastures and arable fields.

Key biodiversity
This is an important site for species that breed in reedbeds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (non-breeding), Gallinago media (passage).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threat is increased eutrophication from agricultural run-off as water-levels fall. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
