Site description (2007 baseline)
Lake Asahiike in Niigata Prefecture is the largest lagoon among six lagoons scattered at northern Kubiki Plain, and the total area is about 79 ha. On the northwestern side of the lagoon, reed beds are found, and Nuphar japonicum, Trapa japonica and Brasenia schreberi grow in the lagoon. Unoike, neighboring the western side of Asahiike is a lagoon of 49ha, and Nelumbo nucifera cover the entire surface of the lake. Unoike's shape is like a peninsula jutting out into the lagoon, and the northwestern side is a city park.
