Site description (2000 baseline)
A shallow, nutrient-rich lake that was partly drained in the 19th century, allowing extensive reedbeds to colonize about one third of the total area. The shallow waters (average depth 0.8 m) are rich in aquatic flora. The surrounding grassland is mainly grazed, and there are some areas of arable land.

Key biodiversity
The IBA is important for breeding waterbirds and other species of wetland habitats. It also holds over 20,000 passage waterbirds on a regular basis. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex.
