Lake Persöfjärden


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A lake, c.15 km long, which was isolated from the Gulf of Bothnia by land elevation. The shallow waters have favoured the spread of Scirpus and Phragmites, which almost divide the lake in two at one point. Floating vegetation is also extensive and parts of the south-western end of the lake have been invaded by Salix scrub.



Key biodiversity
The area is important as a resting area for migrating geese, ducks, raptors and waders. 210 species of bird have been recorded.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Dredging undertaken by land-owners poses a threat.



Protected areas
National None International High3,320 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Persöfjärden, 3,320 ha).
