Site description (2007 baseline)
Lake Nakaumi is about 9,200 ha and the fifth largest lake in Japan located on the border of Tottori Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture. It is a brackish lake with an average depth of 6 m. The lake is connected with the Japan Sea on the north while its west part is connected with Lake Shinjiko. The site is one of the most important wintering grounds for waterfowl; 50,000-75,000 birds winter here every year.
