Site description (2007 baseline)
Thirteen medium and small-sized rivers flow into Fukushimagata in Niigata Prefecture. Fukushimagata functions as flood control, and its water flows to the Japan Sea through artificial watercourses. There are vast reed beds around Fukushimagata, and paddy fields are found as far as you can see the area. It is the northern limit of the Euryale ferox habitat. About 450 kinds of plants including aquatic plants and hydorphytes such as Monochoria korsakowii and Sparganium erectum are observed.
