Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
An eutrophic freshwater lake largely covered by reed
Phragmites. In recent years the lake has been almost completely drained.
This is an important area for breeding herons. Breeding birds include nine of the 21 species in Europe that are restricted (when breeding) to the Mediterranean biome.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threat is continued abstraction of water for industry and agriculture that threatens the lake with complete drainage. Another serious threat is the planned construction of two wind-farms in the hills surrounding the site.
National Partial
International NonePart of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Argriro-Pr. Hlias-Panagia/Aliveriou-Argirou-Pras, 5,440 ha).
