Site location and context
Lake Doirani is fringed with reedbeds (
Phragmites) and riverine forest. The site lies adjacent to site 010 in the FYR Macedonia.
The site is important for wintering waterbirds.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats to the site are from the intensification of agriculture and the resulting over-exploitation of water, pollution and hunting. The water-level has dropped in recent years as a result of ground- and surface-water abstraction for irrigation (`Other' threats). Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
