IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2019 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Spectacled Duck Speculanas specularis NT resident (2015–2019) 10–30 birds A3, B1a
Chilean Pigeon Patagioenas araucana LC resident (2015–2018) 2–70 birds A3
Austral Parakeet Enicognathus ferrugineus LC resident (2015–2018) 2–82 birds A3
Dusky Tapaculo Scytalopus fuscus LC resident (2015–2018) 1–2 adults A3
White-throated Treerunner Pygarrhichas albogularis LC resident (2015–2018) 1–16 birds A3

Des Murs's Wiretail Sylviorthorhynchus desmurii LC resident (2015–2019) 1–3 birds A3
Patagonian Tyrant Colorhamphus parvirostris LC non-breeding (2015–2019) 1–6 birds A3
Fire-eyed Diucon Xolmis pyrope LC resident (2015–2019) 1–14 birds A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2019. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 good high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Artificial/Aquatic & Marine good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Artificial/Aquatic & Marine major (>10) Other artificial wetlands

Land use
