The site comprises a lake, marshes, wet meadows, and agricultural land. Human activities include gravel extraction.
The site is important for wintering waterbirds.

Recreational activities cause disturbance to birds.

International Low474 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Marais de Lavours, 474 ha). 772 ha of IBA covered by 4 Hunting Reserves (Anse Nord, 200 ha; Memars, 20 ha; Marais du Nord du Lac du Bourget, 500 ha; Canal de Savières, 4.2 km). 473 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Lac et Marais du Bourget: Marais de Lavours, 473 ha).
