Site description (2000 baseline)
A lake with marshes and wet meadows, surrounded by woodland, hedgerows, grassland and arable land.
Key biodiversity
The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds on passage and in winter, on a regular basis (including Anas penelope (4,500 passage); Anas crecca (2,572 (wintering); Anas platyrhynchos (5,000 passage, 3,537 wintering); Vanellus vanellus (30,000 passage); Larus ridibundus (20,000 passage, 15,250 wintering)). The site is a major migratory bottleneck, where more than 20,000 Grus grus pass, on a regular basis. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria include: Branta ruficollis (wintering); Aythya nyroca (passage, wintering); Haliaeetus albicilla (passage, 2-5 wintering individuals); Crex crex (passage, breeding); Gallinago media (passage).
