Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The site includes a large expanse of land devoted to agriculture and cattle ranching, with large drainage channels that retain some aquatic vegetation. Many areas flood in winter.
This is an important site for migrant raptors and storks and foraging area for dispersing juvenile raptors. It is also a major migratory bottleneck, where about 85,000
Ciconia ciconia pass regularly in spring. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Aquila adalberti (non-breeding),
Tetrax tetrax (35 resident pairs) and
Otis tarda (4 resident pairs).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Continued drainage is the major threat.
