TR004
Küçükçekmece Basin This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC passage (1993–1995) 126–160 birds A1
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC winter (1993) 10,200 birds A4i, B1i
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (-) 21,177–21,273 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Residential and commercial development happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution past (and unlikely to return) and no longer limiting some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low

IBA Protection

Year Protected Area Designation (management category) % coverage of IBA
2010 Küçükçekmece Lake Wetland of Local Importance (-) 100

Habitats

Marine Coastal/Supratidal major (>10)
Wetlands (inland) major (>10) Standing freshwater; Water fringe vegetation
