IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2010) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2010 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus 0 / 40 (pairs) 0 very poor
Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis 250 / 250 (pairs) 100 good
Greater Scaup Aythya marila 120 / 120 (pairs) 100 good
Eurasian Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria 7,800 / 7,500 (pairs) 100 good
Eurasian Dotterel Eudromias morinellus 1,400 / 1,400 (pairs) 100 good
Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica 45 / 45 (pairs) 100 good
Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii 800 / 800 (pairs) 100 good
Spotted Redshank Tringa erythropus 200 / 200 (pairs) 100 good
Long-tailed Jaeger Stercorarius longicaudus 1,100 / 1,100 (pairs) 100 good
Snowy Owl Bubo scandiacus 0 / 10 (pairs) 0 very poor
Bluethroat Luscinia svecica 4,500 / 15,000 (pairs) 30 very poor
Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis 27,000 / 30,000 (pairs) 90 moderate
Lapland Longspur Calcarius lapponicus 30,000 / 20,000 (pairs) 100 good
Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivalis 1,700 / 1,700 (pairs) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
