Kulu Lake

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN non-breeding (-) 140–200 birds A1, A4i, B1i
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN winter (-) 200–290 birds A1, A4i, B1i
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN breeding (-) 20–30 pairs A1, B1i, B2
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC winter (1992) 9,718 birds B1i
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea LC non-breeding (-) 2,000–3,000 birds A4i, B1i
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus LC non-breeding (-) 1,000–4,600 birds A4i, B1i
Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo LC passage (2000–2001) 2–3 birds B1i
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta LC breeding (1989–1996) 250 pairs B1i
Greater Sandplover Charadrius leschenaultii LC non-breeding (1994) 100 birds B1i

Common Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica LC breeding (-) 171–473 pairs A4i, B1i, B2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) poor (40–69%) poor (40–69%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Pollution happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low
