IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-breasted Goose Branta ruficollis VU passage (2001) 2,000–10,000 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC passage (2001) 20,000–30,000 birds A4i, B1i
Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina LC non-breeding (2002) 600–700 birds B1i
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia LC breeding (2002) 80–100 pairs A4i, B1i, B2
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT non-breeding (2002) 110–140 birds A1, A4i, B1i

A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a passage (2001–2002) 20,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2002) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2002 not assessed medium low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no unset medium

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Wetlands (inland) 70 Standing brackish and salt water; Standing freshwater
Grassland 30 Steppes and dry calcareous grassland

Land use

Land use % of IBA
hunting 100
rangeland/pastureland 30
