Kotychi lagoon


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A small brackish lagoon separated from the sea by dunes and surrounded by patches of saltmarsh and agricultural land. Human activities include aquaculture, agriculture, and tourism.



Key biodiversity
The site is important for breeding, passage and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Pelecanus crispus (5-11 non-breeding individuals), Aythya nyroca (passage).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Hunting is a serious problem, despite a partial prohibition. Additional threats are from aquaculture, road construction and tourism development. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
