IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2001 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('key species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Little Crake Zapornia parva LC breeding (1999) 180–500 breeding pairs B2
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (1999) 250–300 breeding pairs B2
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax LC breeding (1999) 60–460 breeding pairs B2
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea LC breeding (1999) 20–80 breeding pairs B2
Great White Egret Ardea alba LC breeding (1999) 60–200 breeding pairs A4i, B1i
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU breeding (1999) 100–300 breeding pairs B2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2001. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation status
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 very unfavourable medium not assessed
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information

State (condition of the key species' populations)

Ixobrychus minutus 50 / 275 (breeding pairs) 19 very unfavourable
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax 70 / 260 (breeding pairs) 27 very unfavourable
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea 200 / 50 (breeding pairs) 100 favourable
Great White Egret Ardea alba 40 / 130 (breeding pairs) 31 very unfavourable
