Konka river mouth

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2001 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Little Crake Zapornia parva LC breeding (1999) 180–500 pairs B2
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (1999) 250–300 pairs B2
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax LC breeding (1999) 60–460 pairs B2
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea LC breeding (1999) 20–80 pairs B2
Great White Egret Ardea alba LC breeding (1999) 60–200 pairs A4i, B1i
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU breeding (1999) 100–300 pairs B2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2001. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 very poor medium not assessed
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Ixobrychus minutus 50 / 275 (pairs) 19 very poor
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax 70 / 260 (pairs) 27 very poor
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea 200 / 50 (pairs) 100 good
Great White Egret Ardea alba 40 / 130 (pairs) 31 very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Transportation and service corridors likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) medium
Natural system modifications likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
