IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2017 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Western Reef-egret Egretta gularis LC non-breeding (1995–2015) 130–200 birds B3a
Socotra Cormorant Phalacrocorax nigrogularis VU non-breeding (2001–2015) 55,000–120,000 birds A1, A4, B3a
Charadrius mongolus NR non-breeding (1995–2015) 950–2,500 birds B3a
Slender-billed Gull Larus genei LC winter (1995–2002) 1,400–1,820 birds B3a
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a non-breeding (2001–2015) 55,000–120,000 birds B3b

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2017. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 poor very high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat poor

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
A4iii Species group - waterbirds 3,176 / 7,742 (birds) 42 poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Intertidal poor (40–69%) moderate (70–90%) very poor
Marine Coastal/Supratidal poor (40–69%) moderate (70–90%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Residential and commercial development happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Some limited conservation initiatives are in place very low
