Site description (2000 baseline)
The site comprises the majority of the archipelagic part of southern Kallavesi lake in the heart of the province of North Savo, with the addition of the small, eutrophic Kuhanen Bay on the western edge of the lake. The site is mostly open water with some large islands with coniferous forest and numerous small, treeless rocky islets. Kuhanen Bay differs considerably from the rest of the area, being shallow and quite heavily vegetated, and serves as a feeding area for wildfowl, gulls and terns breeding in the archipelago. The lake's shoreline is mainly undeveloped.

Key biodiversity
An important breeding area of Larus fuscus fuscus.
