IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2011 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Rock Partridge Alectoris graeca NT breeding (2002–2010) 5–10 pairs C6
European Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus LC breeding (2002–2010) 500–800 pairs B2, C6
Eurasian Scops-owl Otus scops LC breeding (2006–2010) 120–200 pairs B2
Eurasian Eagle-owl Bubo bubo LC breeding (2004–2011) 9–16 pairs B2, C6
Short-toed Snake-eagle Circaetus gallicus LC breeding (2000–2010) 5–10 pairs B2, C6
Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus LC breeding (2000–2010) 90–100 pairs C6
Woodlark Lullula arborea LC breeding (2002–2010) 1,100–1,500 pairs B2, C6
Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris LC breeding (1995–2010) 20–30 pairs C6
Rock Bunting Emberiza cia LC breeding (2002–2010) 1,600–1,800 pairs B2
Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana LC breeding (2000–2010) 90–130 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2011. The most recent assessment (2015) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2015 very poor very high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Short-toed Snake-eagle Circaetus gallicus 6 / 7 (pairs) 86 moderate
Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana 5 / 110 (pairs) 5 very poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland good (>90%) poor (40–69%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Energy production and mining happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
