Site description (2000 baseline)
Islands and peninsulas in shallow fjord areas with cultivated land and scattered habitation as well as grasslands, saltmarshes and reedbeds. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in Smålandsfarvandet (site 118).
Key biodiversity
This is an important site for migrating waterbirds (regularly more than 20,000 individuals present in total). Non-breeding numbers exclude birds from Avnø Fjord and Karrebæksminde Fjord. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site including Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea, S. albifrons and Lanius collurio.
