IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris NT breeding (-) 2–3 pairs B2
Eurasian Coot Fulica atra LC winter (-) 26,000–45,930 birds A4i, B1i
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC winter (-) 64–200 birds A1
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC breeding (-) 150–200 pairs A1, B1i, B3
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC winter (-) 3,000–6,000 birds A4i, B1i
Pallid Scops-owl Otus brucei LC breeding (-) 1–3 pairs B2
Pied Kingfisher Ceryle rudis LC breeding (-) 3–5 pairs B2
Desert Lark Ammomanes deserti LC breeding (-) 5–10 pairs B2
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (2001) 31,500–48,270 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Energy production and mining likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

IBA Protection

Year Protected Area Designation (management category) % coverage of IBA
2015 Karkamış Taşkın Ovası Wetland of National Importance (-) 100
