Site description (2009 baseline):

The main habitat in the IBA is grassland.

Non-bird biodiversity: It nature reserve was established for wild ungulates.

The IBA is inside Karamay Kalamaili Shan Nature Reserve (1,589,958 ha), which was established in 1982 and upgraded to provincial level in 1986.
