Kamfers Dam This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 1998 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca LC non-breeding (-) 6,000 birds A4i
South African Shelduck Tadorna cana LC non-breeding (-) 92–500 birds A4i
Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis LC non-breeding (-) 900 birds A4i
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus LC non-breeding (-) 1,208–18,000 birds A4i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 1998. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 very poor very high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca 1,994 / 6,000 (birds) 34 very poor
South African Shelduck Tadorna cana 500 / 500 (birds) 100 good
Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis 448 / 900 (birds) 50 poor
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus 4,800 / 18,000 (birds) 27 very poor
Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor 81,000 / 19,566 (birds) 100 good
Chestnut-banded Plover Charadrius pallidus 8 / 18 (birds) 45 poor
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni 300 / 300 (birds) 100 good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) poor (40–69%) poor
Shrubland good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Pollution happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Climate change and severe weather happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Transportation and service corridors happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Biological resource use happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Residential and commercial development likely in short term (<4 years) few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Very little or no conservation action taking place very low
