Kamfers Dam This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 1998 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca LC non-breeding - 6,000 individuals A4i
South African Shelduck Tadorna cana LC non-breeding - 92-500 individuals A4i
Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis LC non-breeding - 900 individuals A4i
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus LC non-breeding - 1,208-18,000 individuals A4i

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (1998) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 1998. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 very unfavourable very high negligible
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Reference Actual Units % remaining Result
Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca 6,000 1,994 individuals 34 very unfavourable
South African Shelduck Tadorna cana 500 500 individuals 100 favourable
Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis 900 448 individuals 50 unfavourable
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus 18,000 4,800 individuals 27 very unfavourable
Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor 19,566 81,000 individuals 100 favourable
Chestnut-banded Plover Charadrius pallidus 18 8 individuals 45 unfavourable
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni 300 300 individuals 100 favourable

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) good (> 90%) poor (40-69%) unfavourable
Shrubland good (> 90%) moderate (70-90%) near favourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole area/population (>90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high
Pollution happening now whole area/population (>90%) moderate to rapid deterioration very high
Climate change and severe weather happening now whole area/population (>90%) moderate to rapid deterioration very high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of area/population (10-49%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Residential and commercial development likely in long term (beyond 4 years) some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low
Transportation and service corridors happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low
Biological resource use happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) no or imperceptible deterioration low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) No management plan exists but the management planning process has begun Very little or no conservation action taking place negligible
