Kalogria lagoon, Strofylia forest and Lamia marshes


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A coastal wetland with saltmarshes, brackish lagoons, extensive reedbeds (Phragmites), sand-dunes, and Pinus forest. Human activities include arable agriculture, stock-raising, fishing, hunting, and recreation.



Key biodiversity
This is an important IBA for passage migrants and breeding and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Phalacrocorax pygmeus (wintering), Aythya nyroca (minimum 30 passage individuals), Aquila clanga (wintering), Falco naumanni (passage).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from intensive tourism development, hunting and forest grazing. The shallow lagoons are sensitive to manipulation of the water-levels. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National None International Partial3,523 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Limnothalassa Kalogrias, Dasos Strofilias kai Elos, 3,523 ha). Part of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Kotychi lagoon, 6309 ha).
