IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2005 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-breasted Goose Branta ruficollis VU winter (1997) 5–157 birds A1, C1
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC winter (1997) 6,003–15,034 birds A4i, B1i, C3
Yelkouan Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan VU non-breeding (1997) 18–1,220 birds A4ii, B1ii, C2
European Shag Gulosus aristotelis LC resident (2002) 250 pairs B1i, C2, C6
Eurasian Thick-knee Burhinus oedicnemus LC breeding (1996) 46 pairs C6
Little Gull Hydrocoloeus minutus LC winter (1997) 3,505–3,620 birds A4i, B1i, C2
Mew Gull Larus canus LC winter (1997) 266–6,301 birds B1i, C3
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU breeding (1997) 5 pairs B2, C6

Calandra Lark Melanocorypha calandra LC resident (1997) 1,283–2,000 pairs C6
Greater Short-toed Lark Calandrella brachydactyla LC breeding (1996) 481 pairs C6
Pied Wheatear Oenanthe pleschanka LC breeding (1996) 181 pairs C6
Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris LC breeding (1996) 127 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2005. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 very poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Red-breasted Goose Branta ruficollis 100 / 15,000 (birds) 1 very poor
Yelkouan Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan 0 / 619 (birds) 0 very poor
Burhinus oedicnemus 17 / 46 (pairs) 37 very poor
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus 0 / 5 (pairs) 0 very poor
Calandra Lark Melanocorypha calandra 1,100 / 1,641 (pairs) 68 poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland very poor (<40%) very poor (<40%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Energy production and mining happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Residential and commercial development likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
