IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2001 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-breasted Goose Branta ruficollis VU passage (1999) 60 birds A1
Greylag Goose Anser anser LC passage (1999) 2,000 birds B1i
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC passage (1999) 10,000 birds B1i
Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula LC passage (1999) 1,200 birds B1i
Smew Mergellus albellus LC passage (1999) 1,000 birds A4i, B1i
Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis LC passage (1999) 1,000 birds A4i, B1i
Common Crane Grus grus LC passage (1999) 300 birds B2
Great Bustard Otis tarda EN passage (1999) 60 birds A1
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (1999) 150 pairs B2
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC non-breeding (1999) 1,000 birds B1i
European Bee-eater Merops apiaster LC breeding (1999) 100 pairs B2
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a passage (1999) min 20,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2001. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 very poor medium not assessed
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula 800 / 1,200 (birds) 67 poor
Smew Mergellus albellus 60 / 1,000 (birds) 6 very poor
Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis 40 / 1,000 (birds) 4 very poor
Ixobrychus minutus 85 / 150 (pairs) 57 poor
