IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Caucasian Snowcock Tetraogallus caucasicus LC resident (1990) 3,000 A2, A3, B3
Caucasian Grouse Lyrurus mlokosiewiczi NT resident (2001) 500 pairs A1, A2, A3, B2
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus NT resident (1990) 10 B2
Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca VU breeding (1990) 3 pairs A1, A3
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos LC resident (1990) 4–6 B2
Yellow-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax graculus LC resident (1990) 3,000 A3
Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria LC resident (1990) 2,500 A3
Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris LC resident (1990) 2,500 A3
White-winged Snowfinch Montifringilla nivalis LC resident (1990) 50–100 A3
Great Rosefinch Carpodacus rubicilla LC resident (1990) 500–1,000 A3, B2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 moderate not assessed medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus 7 / 10 (pairs) 70 moderate
Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca 5 / 5 (pairs) 100 good
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos 3 / 4 (pairs) 75 moderate

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented medium
