IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Land ownership
Owned by state. In the north-western part Indigenous people from Apura have traditional hunting and fishing rights. Kabalebo Airstrip is leased by tour operator, Arapahu island in the south-west is leased by tour operator.
