Site description (2000 baseline)
A large area of boreal forest and mire east of Oulujärvi lake, and adjacent to the Russian border. Most of the forests are old and coniferous, and in some areas largely untouched by man. The peatlands are dominated by poor, at least partly forested, twig fens, although areas of more fertile mires and swamp bogs are also present. Numerous lakes, ponds and streams are scattered throughout the area.

Key biodiversity
An important breeding area for boreal avifauna.
