Site description (2002 baseline)
This IBA includes the upper plateau and the northern slopes which decline steeply to the valley of the Smìdá river. The upper plateau has developped dramatically over the past 30 years. The spruce monoculture which had replaced original fir-beech forests was destroyed by air pollution and subsequently by attacks of larchbud moth and bark beetle. Most damaged stands were clear-cut and part died away. Remnants of old spruce forests were preserved only in reserves. Then the upper plateau was reforested, mainly with the common spruce or with the introduced blue spruce.
