Site description (2009 baseline)
Located in the south-western part of Jiuzhaigou County. Jiuzhaigou is a mountain valley that extends for more than 40 km, with nine Tibetan villages in the vicinity. The river valley and the slopes are fully covered by dense forest, and there are 118 lakes along the valley. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with temperate coniferous forest (2,000-2,500 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,500-2,800 m), coniferous forest (2,800-3,500 m) and alpine scrub and grassland (above 3,500 m).

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Ailurpoda melanolenca, Pygathrix roxellanae, Pseudois nayaur, Panthera pardus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus berezovskii and Naemorhedus goral.
