Jiuding Shan Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located in the western edge of Jinzhu and Shifang cities, in the southern section of the Longmen Shan mountain ranges. Ancient geological movements formed sheer mountains in western Sichuan. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest from 1,000-1,600 m, broadleaf evergreen and deciduous mixed forest from 1,600-2,400 m, coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest from 2,400-3,000 m, coniferous forest from 3,000-3,800 m, alpine scrub and grassland from 3,800-4,300 m, and alpine vegetation above 4,300 m.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Davidia involucrate, Taiwania cryptomerioides, Cercidiphyllum japonicum and Ginkgo biloba. Animals include Ailurpoda melanolenca, Pygathrix roxellanae, Panthera pardus, Neofelis nebulosa, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus berezovskii, Macaca thibetana, Pseudois nayaur and Cervus unicolor.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve (63,700 ha) in 1998.
