Site description (2000 baseline)
The site includes a series of fish-ponds associated with the rivers Jijia and Miletin and a reservoir used for irrigation. The northern and eastern shores of the reservoir are reinforced with concrete; the southern shore supports cereal cultivation. The western shore is marshy, with c.450 ha of reedbed (Phragmites). The Jijia plain is subject to flooding; grassland and agricultural land comprise the surrounds. The site also includes the Borsa and Catachi forests.
Key biodiversity
The site is particularly important for breeding waterbirds, wintering and passage Anatidae; waders occur in large numbers on passage. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Phalacrocorax pygmeus (passage), Aythya nyroca (8 breeding pairs), Haliaeetus albicilla (passage), Aquila heliaca (passage), Crex crex (8-10 breeding pairs) and Gallinago media (passage). A total of 190 species have been recorded.
