IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 1994 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Crowned Sandgrouse Pterocles coronatus LC resident (1993) present A3
Asian Houbara Chlamydotis macqueenii VU resident (1993) frequent A1, A3, B2
Brown-necked Raven Corvus ruficollis LC resident (1993) present A3
Greater Hoopoe-lark Alaemon alaudipes LC resident (1993) present A3
Bar-tailed Lark Ammomanes cinctura LC resident (1993) present A3
Black-crowned Sparrow-lark Eremopterix nigriceps LC resident (1993) present A3
Arabian Lark Eremalauda eremodites LC resident (1993) present A3
Desert Wheatear Oenanthe deserti LC resident (1993) present A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 1994. The most recent assessment (1993) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
1993 moderate low low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Desert good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Energy production and mining likely in long term (>4 years) few individuals/small area (<10%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
