Site description (2009 baseline):
Site location and context
Located on the southern slopes of the central Himalayas, at the south-eastern tip of Jilung County. The IBA has high mountains and deep valleys, with dense forests of the following types: pine forest (1,800-2,400 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,400-3,200 m), alpine coniferous forest (3,200-4,000 m) and high-altitude scrub (4,000-4,500 m).
Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Presbytis entellus (a primate endemic to the Himalayas), Ursus arctos, Selenarctos thibetanus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus chrysogaster and Capricornis sumatraensis.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The provincial-level Jiang Cun Nature Reserve (34,060 ha) was established in 1985. Qomolangma Feng National Nature Reserve (3,300,000 ha), which partially overlaps with the IBA, was first established in 1988 and fully established in 1993. Qomolangma was designated in 2004 as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
