Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located within Ledong Li Autonomous County. The IBA has a tropical forest ecosystem and the vegetation shows distinct vertical zonation, including tropical semi-deciduous monsoon rainforest, tropical evergreen monsoon rainforest and tropical montane rainforest.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Neofelis nebulosa, Selenarctos thibetanus, Viverra zibetha, Viverricula indica, Lepus hainanus, Petaurista hainana and Neohylomys hainanensis. There were also historical records of Nomascus hainanus, but it is now locally extinct. Nationally protected plants include Maduca hainanensis, Dalbergia hainanensis and Habenaria sp.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a county-level nature reserve in 1960, and upgraded to a provincial-level nature reserve in 1976 and a national nature reserve (20,170 ha) in 1992. Forest in the area has been seriously damaged and the original area of tropical rainforest has been reduced by some 65%.
