Site description (1994 baseline):
Site location and context
An island off Hino, c.7 km south-east of Marbat, lying within the zone of strong upwelling during the summer monsoon.
See box for key species. There is a report of large numbers of terns nesting on the island. Notable numbers of feeding and/or moving seabirds occur offshore, e.g.
Puffinus persicus (see box).
Non-bird biodiversity: Unusual beds of kelp Ecklonia radiata with abalones Haliotis mariae and the spiny lobster Panulirus homarus occur offshore.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Over-exploitation of eggs for food with resulting disturbance of nesting birds is reported to be a major problem. The area is part of the proposed Marbat National Nature Reserve (26,000 ha).
