CL029
Islotes Pajaros This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2019 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Humboldt Penguin Spheniscus humboldti VU breeding (2015–2019) 6–100 birds A1, B3b
Peruvian Diving-petrel Pelecanoides garnotii NT non-breeding (2015–2019) 9–250 birds A1, B3b
Peruvian Pelican Pelecanus thagus NT resident (2015–2019) 12–25 birds B3b
Peruvian Booby Sula variegata LC breeding (2003) 18,000 birds A4, B3b
Red-legged Cormorant Poikilocarbo gaimardi NT resident (2015–2019) 4–6 birds B3b
Guanay Cormorant Leucocarbo bougainvilliorum NT breeding (2015–2019) 4–45 birds B1a, B3b
Neotropical Cormorant Nannopterum brasilianum LC breeding (2003) 50 birds B3b
Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus LC breeding (2003) 2,000 birds B3b
Inca Tern Larosterna inca NT breeding (2015–2019) 3–12 birds B3b

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2019. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 good very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Coastal/Supratidal - good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Energy production and mining likely in short term (<4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance likely in short term (<4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Marine Coastal/Supratidal major (>10)
Shrubland major (>10) Arid lowland scrub

Land use

Land use % of IBA
nature conservation and research major (>10)
